Superb example of Boston Red Sox star "Smokey" Joe Wood from the scarce 1916 D381 Fleischmann Bakery issue. This card is part of an exciting, new-to-the-hobby collection of sixty-five D381s that appear in this auction. The collection has been consigned by the family of the original owner, who collected the cards at the time of issue while living in the New York area. The D381 set is a scarce bread issue produced by New York City-based Fleischmann Bakery for distribution with its products. These large cards (2-3/8 x 4-7/8 inches) are printed on thin stock and feature a coupon at the bottom designed to be clipped away and exchanged (fifty coupons plus fifty cents) for a leather album designed to hold the cards. Many of the surviving examples are found with the coupon clipped, but ideally, the offered example is fully intact. The offered card displays a crisp image, light wear at the corners, and centering slightly to the top. It has been downgraded to FAIR 20 by SGC due to a small tear on the left border that does not affect the important central image or detract from the cards superior display value. This is one of only three examples of Wood ever graded by SGC from the D381 set! The thin stock makes D381s especially fragile and susceptible to minor faults, including creases, tears, and wear at the corners. This is a very attractive and desirable sample card from one of the scarcest and most condition-sensitive prewar bakery-card issues. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
