Graded VG/EX+ 55 by SGC (submitted by REA). This is the ONLY example graded at this level by SGC with just one higher. Superb and extremely rare circa 1912 Underwood & Underwood Postcard of New York Giants Hall of Famer Rube Marquard. The real-photo postcard captures the legendary pitcher in a full-length throwing pose. Marquard is pictured wearing a solid-black uniform featuring the club's "NY" insignia on the left sleeve. These uniforms were specially made for use during the 1911 World Series against the Philadelphia Athletics and were exclusive to the Series. They were not worn during the 1912 regular season or any season afterwards. The photographer's credit "Underwood & Underwood. N.Y." appears underneath. This is one of a series of postcards produced using photos taken by this noted studio. The postcard (3.5 x 5.5 inches) has not been mailed and presents with a crisp, clear photograph, outstanding centering, and light wear to the corners (slightly more in the upper right). Close inspection reveals a faint vertical factory line-indentation (approx. two inches long) in the background along the left portion of the card. This line is barely noticeable and can only be seen when the card is held at the right angle under extreme light. The reverse is entirely clean. It is interesting to note Marquard’s name is misspelled “Maraquard” on this card. This is a stunning postcard, the first example that we can recall offering, worthy of any advanced postcard, Hall of Famer, or prewar-card collection. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
