Graded VG 40 by SGC (submitted by REA). One of only two examples graded at this level with none higher! Incredibly rare sample card of Goat Anderson from the unusual and distinctive D380-1 Clement Brothers Bread series. This early bakery series was regionally issued only in the Rochester, New York, area circa 1909. The set is so rare that with few exceptions it is not on the radar of even the most advanced collectors. The cards were issued one per loaf of bread, and measure 1.5 x 2.75 inches. The reverse of each card features advertising for Clement Bros. bakery's bread and pies. Minor-league members of the Rochester (Eastern League) team comprise the set. The offered example of Anderson is encapsulated as Vg by SGC due to a couple tiny creases near the left edge. They are barely noticeable and visible only under very close inspection. The card is otherwise clean and crisp, with four strong corners, flawless image contrast, and centering a hint to the left. Boldly printed reverse. Anderson's image is within an oval frame, a tougher design style within this set. This is a very scarce and desirable sample card from one of prewar-card collecting's rarest and most obscure bakery issues. From the Dan Gantt Collection. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
