Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. This is the ONLY example graded at this level with none higher! Extremely rare tobacco card of Hal Chase/portrait (Buffalo, Federal League) from the 1914 Kotton Cigarettes set. The Kotton set shares designs with several other closely related caramel and bakery issues (E90-1 American Caramel Company, E92 Dockman & Sons, etc.) from the same era. All Kotton cards are extremely rare. This is a particularly fascinating card in the set as it lists Chase as a member of the Buffalo Blues from the Federal League on the bottom. Chase left the White Sox to join the Buffalo Blues before the start of the 1914 season. (Two variations of Chase with Buffalo also exist within this set.) Produced by the People's Tobacco Co. of New Orleans, the Kotton series was regionally issued only in the Louisiana area. The offered sample card of Hal Chase (one of three poses of Chase in the set) has a flawless image set against a striking red background, with light, even corner wear, and no creases or wrinkles. Outstanding centering with a natural diamond cut along the top and bottom edges. The reverse is clean with a bold, well-centered advertisement for Kotton Cigarettes. This is an extremely high-grade example featuring a noteworthy player from this rare set.
