Presented is an extremely rare double-player N173 Old Judge cabinet card featuring John Reilly and "Little Nick" Nicol (#346-7 pose) of the Cincinnati Red Stockings. According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, there are twenty-three different cards on which Goodwin & Co. identifies both players by name (as is the case with the offered example). Approximately twenty-seven other cards within the set feature a second player but only list one player on the card. The offered example presents with an outstanding photo that is a little light in areas but also possesses tremendous detail--you can count the laces on their shoes and the folds in their pants! The card grades Vg to Vg-Ex overall, with outstanding centering, light, even wear to the corners, a perfectly mounted photo, and only scattered foxing on front and back. This remains a rare and outstanding sample featuring two players from one of the most revered and substantial of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
