Superb example of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from a rare and unusual 1910-era candy-card set. Designated in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards and by professional grading companies as "1910 E-UNC Candy," very little is known about the origin of these cards. This example boasts a diamond design surrounding the card, suggesting that these cards were likely part of a larger box and intended to be cut out by hand. The image of Mathewson used on this card is the exact same one as featured on his E98 caramel cards. The offered example is neatly cut (with the exception of a rounded cut at the bottom right corner) and boasts a brilliant red design. The back is blank. The card displays as Fr-Gd due to a small tear and moderate creasing. The SGC Authentic designation is due to the presence of the diamond design surrounding the card, not due to any alteration. While the exact origin of this card is unknown, it remains a desirable and extremely attractive card issued during Mathewson’s legendary career. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
