Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai Brown from this very rare and classic 1910-era candy set. The E103 Williams Caramel set is easily distinguished from other caramel sets of the era by the bright red background highlighting each player's portrait. As noted on each card along the lower margin, the Williams Candy Company was located in Oxford, Pa., and this candy was very likely issued on a somewhat regional basis. This fact almost certainly accounts for their great rarity. When they are found, they usually have serious condition problems, which is not surprising considering that these cards were issued to children, one card per package of candy. The offered example has a crisp image, a deep red background, even wear to the four corners, a very faint crease near the upper right corner (more visible from the back), and centering slightly towards the top. A small section of paperloss on the reverse accounts for the assigned grade. Clean blank reverse. This is a very attractive example of one of Brown's most desirable and striking cards, a worthy and significant addition to any advanced Hall of Fame or prewar-card collection. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
