Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. One of only four examples graded at this level with none higher! This extremely attractive E101 "Set of 50" candy card features the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a horizontal throwing pose. This is a sharp-looking example of one of Mathewson's most classic cards. While Mathewson was included in many candy-card issues from the 1910 era, this horizontal throwing pose is considered by many to be the most attractive of all Mathewson caramel-card designs. The manufacturer of E101 is unknown. The artwork of Mathewson on this card is identical to that found in several candy sets of the era that share the same designs, including E105 Mello-Mint and E102 "Set of 25." Bright and crisp, with bold colors, flawless registration, and even corner wear. Clean front and back, with no creases and centered slightly to the top left (when held horizontally as intended). Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is an extremely attractive high-grade example of one of Christy Mathewson's most classic cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++.
