Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Only two examples grade higher out of eighty-nine evaluated by SGC to date. High-grade example of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame pitcher Vic Willis in a portrait pose from the highly desirable E95 Philadelphia Caramel series. The E95 set was almost certainly inspired by the great success that tobacco companies were having with their cards. This set is of even greater significance in that the E95 artwork was not reissued by other manufacturers, as was so widespread with other “E” card issues. The designs used in E95 are unique to the set. These cards have a very distinctive look to them and the artwork is definitely a cut above their rivals of the time. Due to the thin stock on which they are printed, E95 Philadelphia Caramel cards are rarely found in such high grade. This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of Willis' most classic cards from this scarce caramel-card set issued in 1909 by the Philadelphia Caramel Co. of Camden, New Jersey. The card is bright and crisp, with vibrant colors, strong corners, and near-perfect centering. The reverse features a boldly printed checklist for the set. This is a stunning example in extremely high grade of Hall of Famer Vic Willis from one of the era's most popular issues. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
