Complete set of the classic 1948 Leaf football gum-card issue, highlighted by fourteen Hall of Famers. The first forty-nine cards (#1-49) represent the complete first series, and the scarcer second series of forty-nine cards is represented by the high-number cards (#50 thru 98). These are the first color football cards of the post-World War II era. Condition is 30% Ex (including a few Ex-Mt), 26% Vg-Ex, 21% Vg, and 23% lesser. Twenty-eight cards are professionally graded by PSA (except for one SGC as noted). Keys: #1 Luckman RC (VG-EX 4), 3 Turner RC (Vg+), 4 Walker RC (VG-EX 4), 6 Layne RC (VG 3), 9 Thompson RC (Ex), 13 Lujack RC (Vg+), 15 Justice RC (Vg), 16 Pihos RC (EX 5), 19b McAfee/"Gorgeous George" RC (Gd), 22 Van Buren RC (SGC VG 40), 26 Waterfield RC (Ex), 29 Trippi RC (Vg-Ex), 34 Baugh RC (Vg+), 36 Dudley RC (Fr-Gd), 37 Connor RC (Vg-Ex), 52 Nomellini RC (VG-EX 4), 53 Conerly RC (VG-EX 4), 54 Bednarik RC (measures small, otherwise Vg), 66 Cloud (EX 5), 73 Jensen RC (Ex), 91 Hart RC (Vg), and 98 DiMarco RC (Fr). Other Graded Cards: One NM 7: #78 (MC). Three EX-MT 6: #5, 39 (MC), and 67 (OC). Five EX 5: #63, 76, 82, 87, and 90. Eleven VG-EX 4: #55, 56, 58, 61, 74, 77, 80, 81, 89, 92, and 97. Just as the cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf baseball series are much rarer than Bowman and Topps cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, Leaf football cards are also rarer than most other postwar football issues. They are also very distinctive, with an unusual and very colorful design that has always made these a favorite with collectors. This is a very attractive mixed-grade complete set of 1948 Leaf Football, one of card collecting's most popular classics. Total: 98 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
