Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Only two examples graded higher by SGC. Extremely high grade "script series" N172 Old Judge card of Hall of Famer Roger Connor of the New York Giants (pose #88-4). We believe the distinctive "script series" cards were issued in 1886 (although it is possible they date from early 1887). According to The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890), the definitive book on Old Judges by Jay Miller, Joe Gonsowski, and Richard Masson, Connor ranks as the tenth rarest Hall of Famer (out of twenty-eight) in the entire N172 set. Connor was one of the greatest sluggers of the nineteenth century. His 138 career home runs stood as the record until Babe Ruth exceeded it. This example is extraordinary in all respects. It is perfectly clean, with four square corners and near-perfect centering. The photo contrast is flawless and literally one of the finest we have ever seen on an Old Judge card. The blank reverse is entirely clean. This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of the highly prized Hall of Famers in the N172 Old Judge set, and would be a significant highlight in even the most advanced Old Judge, nineteenth-century, or Hall of Famer card collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
