Circa 1908 St. Louis Browns fold-out novelty postcard (5.5 x 3.5 inches) produced by the H. E. Smith company of St. Louis, Missouri. The front of the postcard features a photo of a game in progress, above which is a flap that reads "Official American League Ball." This postcard shares all the characteristics with the "Our Home Team" postcard series produced by the Art Post Card Co. of Detroit, Michigan., with the exception of the printing on the flap and the border color (green as opposed to orange). Housed under the flap, in a folded accordion format, are fourteen black-and-white photo panels (2 x 2.25 inches) picturing members of the St. Louis Browns, including Hall of Famer Rube Waddell. If the checklist for this set parallels the "Our Home Team" series, this is one of five different teams, all of which are extremely scarce. The postcard (3.5 x 5.5 inches) has been mailed (postmarked “St. Louis, July 23, 1908”) and displays a pencil-written address on the postcard back. A few light wrinkles on the front lend to a Very Good overall display value. A fascinating and rare postcard worthy of any advanced collection. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
