While nearly all collectors are familiar with Hartland baseball statues, most will be surprised to learn that the company also produced a Mickey Mantle lamp that was sold in retail stores on a limited basis in the early 1960s. Presented here is one of those rare examples, complete with all of its original components, including bat and shade. The design features a plastic figure of Mantle mounted upon a rectangular wood base, with the lamp pole positioned behind the figure. A plaque on the front of the base reads "Play Ball." The front side of the oval shade displays a crossed-bats-and-ball motif in applied in brown and white felt. This is the first of two versions of this lamp produced by Hartland. The second featured a circular base and round shade, but the gold-painted Mantle figure is identical for each. The lamp, complete with original electric cord, displays only light wear and is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. The is the first example of this Mantle Hartland lamp, which is considered the more desirable of the two editions, we have ever offered. As a point of reference, the other version, with the round base, appeared as Lot 1051 in our April 2015 auction, where it realized $2,160. Height: 18 inches. Base: 9.5 x 5.5 x 1 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+.
