Enormous panoramic team-photo display, measuring 32 x 15.5 inches, capturing thirty-six members of the 1953 World Champion New York Yankees posing together in front of the grandstand at Yankee Stadium. Included here are Mickey Mantle, manager Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Phil Rizzuto, Johnny Mize, and Billy Martin. The size and rarity of this photo is directly related to its special provenance. This piece was originally displayed in the old Yankee Stadium and is one of a number of similar-size Yankees team panoramas, dating as far back as the 1920s, that entered the hobby in 1973 when the stadium was completely renovated. The piece remains housed in its original black wooden frame that bears an engraved plaque along the base that reads "1953 World Champions." We have handled a few other examples of these Yankee Stadium team panoramas (various years) over the years, and all are striking in their presentation. The fact that this example dates from 1953, the year in which the club won its record fifth consecutive World Championship, makes it all the more desirable. The photo, which appears to be mounted upon heavy cardboard stock, displays light toning along the left and right borders, as well as minor emulsions in the upper right corner and base. Excellent condition overall. The heavily worn recessed frame measures 36.25 x 19.5 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
