Yogi Berra H&B signature-model ("R43") bat dating from the New York Yankees' 1953 World Championship season. Graded GU 9 by PSA/DNA. Although the bat conforms to the general 1950 to 1960 manufacturing period, certain variations in the barrel stamping specifically date it to the year 1953. As noted in the accompanying letter from PSA/DNA, the bat displays heavy use along its entire length, including ball marks and stitch impressions on all sides of the barrel, rack marks, checking (grain separation on the back of the barrel (from repeated ball contact), and a crack in the handle. Both the handle crack and checking have been professionally repaired. Ideally, Berra has signed the bat in black Sharpie (grading "10") on the "sweet spot" of the barrel. 1953 marked another stellar season for Berra. The Yankees' reliable backstop batted .296 with 27 home runs and 108 RBI to help lead the club to its record fifth consecutive World Championship that year. A three-time MVP and perennial All-Star Game participant, Berra was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972. This is an outstanding Berra bat, made all the more desirable because it can be specifically dated to a particular year. Length: 35 inches. Weight: 31.1 ounces. LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $2,500. Estimate $10,000+.
