Original large-format team photo capturing twenty-three members of the Cincinnati Reds posing together in front of the grandstand in 1917, including manager Christy Mathewson, Edd Roush, Hal Chase, Heinie Groh, Fred Toney, and Ivey Wingo. The players are pictured in their pinstripe road uniforms, but the locale is not known. Both the date and the photographer's credit ("1917 - Boellinger 21 W. Liberty St.") appear along the base in white lettering. Mathewson was in his first full season as manager of the Reds in 1917, after having succeeded Buck Herzog in midseason of 1916. Under his leadership, Cincinnati finished with a record of 78-76, which marked the club's first winning season since 1909. The crystal-clear image (13.5 x 10.75 inches) displays a heavy diagonal tear and chipping in the upper left corner, as well as light creasing and a few small abrasions in the lower left corner. While technically in Very Good condition, most of the flaws are in the peripheral areas and do not detract in the least from its overall Excellent to Mint appearance. Housed in what appears to be its original wood frame (17 x 14 inches). Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
