Extraordinary large-format (17 x 14 inches) original news photo of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson as a member of the New York Giants in 1911. Accompanied by an LOA from PSA/DNA certifying it as an "Original Type 1 Photograph." Mathewson is pictured on the sidelines warming up prior to a game at the Polo Grounds. The vintage handwritten notations along the bottom white border include the name Christy Mathewson (twice), his team affiliation ("N. Y. Giants"), and the year ("1911"). The year is definitive because the Giants only wore the uniform seen here during the 1911 season. Original news photos of this size are exceedingly rare and normally would not have been produced for use in either a newspaper or periodical. While we cannot state for certain, it is believed by many advanced photo collectors that these oversized news photos were specially produced either at the player's or team's request. One of the reasons for that belief is that of the small number of examples that have surfaced, most have originated from the estates of former players or team executives. We do not know the origin of this photo, but to find one of this size featuring a player of Mathewson's stature is nothing short of miraculous, making it one of the most impressive dead-ball era baseball photos we have ever offered. The photo displays vintage restoration to large chips in each corner, as well as to a number of additional moderate-to-heavy edge tears. The central image area is free of any significant defects and the piece has an overall Excellent appearance. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
