This extremely interesting and attractive panoramic display photograph (42 x 6 inches) captures a game in progress between the Boston Red Sox and New York Americans at Boston's Huntingdon Avenue Grounds Park. The white-letter caption along the base reads "28,221 People See Boston-New York Double Header July-27-1910." As one can easily see here, the stands are filled to capicity, with many fans watching the game from the perimeter of the field, on the sidelines, and in the outfield. Policeman dot the edge of the field, keeping order and ensuring that fans do not disturb the progress of the game. There is incredible detail to this photo, and it is simply astounding to see how much is really going on in the image. Armed with a magnifying glass, the entire world of the stadium is revealed, with the photo providing a unique window into 1910-era baseball, as well as American culture, in a manner that few images can approach. This is a masterpiece of the photographer's art, and an extraordinary example of panoramic photography. We believe that the reason this game has been commemorated by this elaborately produced photographic presentation is because of the huge crowd. The Red Sox only averaged 7,500 fans per game in 1910, so the attendance for the doubleheader on this day may have been a record crowd for the season to date. It would certainly be hard to imagine a bigger crowd. The extraordinary detail of the photo allows us to see that the catcher has just thrown the ball back to the pitcher, with his arm still extended from the throw. The player images are too small to identify, especially with many New York players with their backs to the camera, but the New York Americans are in the field, and most of the Red Sox team players are huddled in the dugout, though some are seated outside. A Glines & George photographer's credit (of 523 Washington St., Boston) appears in the far left. The photo displays a number of very light vertical creases, as well as a few tiny chips and tears along the border, none of which detract in the least from its overall Excellent appearance. Framed to total dimensions of 43 x 7 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
