Classic 1910-era baseball fan featuring six Hall of Famers. The design of the fan features a colorful image of a woman wearing a hat, above which are sepia portraits of sixteen top players or managers in the game, one from each of the sixteen Major League clubs. The American League players, pictured on the left side, are Germany Schaefer (Washington), Bobby Wallace (St. Louis), Billy Sullivan (Chicago), Hal Chase (New York), George Moriarty (Detroit), Harry Lord (Boston), Harry Davis (Philadelphia), and Nap Lajoie (Cleveland). The National League contingent, pictured on the right, consists of Mickey Doolan (Philadelphia), Clark Griffith (Cincinnati), Bill Dahlen (Brooklyn), Bill Sweeney (Boston), Frank Chance (Chicago), Art Devlin (New York), Fred Clarke (Pittsburgh), and Roger Bresnahan (St. Louis). The design of the fan includes two blank score sheets, so that one could score the game and cool off at the same time. "Copyright 1910 by F. A. Schneider" is printed along the bottom border. Baseball-themed fans were very popular in the 1910 era. Most were produced as promotional giveaways for various businesses and they usually display the name of the issuing merchant on the reverse. This fan is no exception and bears advertising for "Boles & Arnold - Dealers in General Merchandise - Prescott Iowa" on the back. There are only a handful of quality 1910 fans featuring actual ballplayers. For some reason, in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, these fans received more attention from advanced collectors than they do today. Sometimes certain types of items that were extremely popular in one era of collecting get overlooked by advanced collectors in a later era, and in our opinion fans fall into this category. Fans featuring players are very much like "giant baseball cards" and are ideal for display. We think the great merits of these substantial rarities will be rediscovered by the advanced collecting landscape. In the meantime, it is a blessing for collectors, as these sell for no more than they did twenty years ago! The fan displays a number of moderate creases, including a large diagonal one that runs from the top border (touching on the images of Davis and Lajoie) down through the scorecard on the right. There is also a small amount of surface paper loss on Bresnahan's hat and Germany Schaefer's hat has been torn away. In Good condition overall. 10 x 14.5 inches (including the handle). Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
