Stickpin issued to commemorate the opening of Forbes Field on June 30, 1909. The novel design features a catcher's glove and ball at the top of the pin. Lettered in relief around the perimeter of the glove is "June 30, 1909, Pittsburgh." This is the first example of this attractive pin we have ever offered, and we have only seen a handful of others over the years. Over 30,000 fans attended the opening of Forbes Field in 1909, which was one of the great architectural and engineering marvels of its day, and one of baseball's first great stadiums. Built at a cost of $2 million and constructed out of steel and concrete, the stadium included a number of "novel" features, such as electric lights, telephones, and even maids in the ladies room. The pin (2.5 inches long) displays light tarnishing and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
