Vintage baseball stitching vise and bench used in the production of Spalding baseballs. While this may seem like a crude device, it should be noted that all Major League baseballs today are still made by hand in much the same manner. The wooden bench bears the Spalding logo on the front, with the metal vise securely bolted on the top. For decorative purposes, a half-stitched baseball, complete with lacing needle attached to the string, is held within the vise. The bench (21 x 11 x 22 inches; includes height of vise with ball) displays heavy wear commensurate with its age and former use, including numerous abrasions and chips. Three screw holes are present in the area where the worker would sit and might represent where a cushioned seat may have once been attached. There is a separate screw hole to the left of the vise, which may have been from a former repositioning of it. The vise displays an equal amount of wear, including oxidation. In Very Good condition overall. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
