Rare stone litho one-sheet movie poster issued for the 1927 Paramount release Casey at the Bat, starring Wallace Beery in the title role. The image features Beery offering an intimidating glance to the captain of the rival team as the two men partake in the time-honored baseball tradition of choosing who will be the home team. This film marked the first time that Ernest Thayer's immortal character, Casey, was brought to life on the silver screen as a feature presentation (a silent short was released in 1913 and in 1922 DeWolf Hopper was recorded on film reciting the poem). All paper from this film is exceedingly rare. This is only the third one-sheet we have ever seen at auction and we can only recall having seen a handful of lobby cards over the years. Produced by Morgan Lithograph, the premier manufacturer of movie posters during that time, the poster's exceptional graphics and vivid colors make this one of the finest baseball-movie posters ever issued. The poster (27 x 41 inches) has been linen-backed, during which process a number of minor flaws were addressed by professional restoration, including tears along the fold lines, pinholes, and the removal of a few stray ink and pencil marks along the bottom white border. Excellent to Mint in appearance. As a point of reference, another one-sheet from this film we have seen, which was also restored on linen, sold for $7,767 in a high-profile movie-poster auction in 2011. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
