Collection of four early figure-eight style baseballs, all of which appear to date to the 1800s. Two appear to be homemade examples, while the other feature tighter stitching and were probably done by a skilled craftsman. As one would expect, all of the balls vary with regard to both size and weight, and display heavy use. This is a fine representative sampling of four early figure-eight balls showing the evolution of what eventually became the standard design for baseballs. 1) 8 inches in circumference; 4.4 ounces. The ball displays a few split stitches. 2) 9.25 inches in circumference; 5.2 ounces. 3) 8.75 inches in circumference; 2.8 ounces.
