Nineteenth-century advertising broadside heralding the arrival of the "Champion Young Lady Ball Players of the World." The illustration features a young woman, dressed in a period woman's baseball uniform, striking a batting pose. Her belt displays the initials "Y. L. BBC." Although not much is known about the Young Ladies' Base Ball Club, it did exist, as we have seen a studio cabinet card of the club, with "Season of 1890 & 1891" printed on the mount. In that cabinet photo, all of the players are wearing striped uniforms and black leggings that are identical to those worn by the player illustrated here. This is the first example we have ever seen of this broadside and it may be the lone survivor. The broadside (14 x 30.5 inches), which appears to be dry mounted to a cardboard backing, displays a number of light-to-moderate creases and small tears which have either been repaired or ameliorated by the mounting process. Excellent in its overall appearance. Framed to total dimensions of 15.5 x 32 inches. The substantial size/weight of this item requires that there will be a shipping charge for this lot (which will vary depending upon where it is being shipped). The shipping charge will be billed separately from the auction invoice. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
