Rare "pill box" style cap most likely dating from the late 1880s. The brown cap features two separate red rings encircling the top and the standard small brim. No manufacturer's tag is present. Wear is commensurate with its age and former use, including a small hole along the right side and a few cracks to the brim. The exterior material also displays a few additional tiny insect holes. The interior cloth lining is soiled and displays a tear along the seam near the brim. Despite its minor flaws this remains an outstanding museum-quality example and one of the finest we have seen. It is also exceedingly rare. We have never offered another "pill box" style cap and can only recall having seen a few others at auction over the years. Reserve $300. Estimate (open).
