BCCO (Arkansas sporting-goods company) "National-American League Ball" signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Al Simmons. Simmons has scripted his name in black fountain pen on a side panel, with the signature grading "5/6." The date, "Feb 11, 1934," is written in blue fountain pen (not in Simmons' hand) on the panel directly above the signature. Simmons was a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1934, after having spent his first nine seasons in the majors (1924-1932) as one of the stars on Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's. One of the greatest hitters in baseball history, Simmons retired in 1944 with a 307 home runs, 1,828 RBI, and a .334 lifetime average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953, but passed away just three years later. Because of his early death at the age of fifty-four, Simmons single-signed balls are rare. This is only the second we have offered and we have seen probably fewer than ten others at auction over the years. The ball, which was produced by an Arkansas sporting goods company, is moderately soiled, but all of the manufacturer's stampings remain bold. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
