Personal check, dated January 24, 1950, and drawn on the Community State Bank of Kansas City, Missouri, signed along the base in green ink (slight bleeding) by "Charles A. Nichols. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signature graded EX-MT 6. The check is made out to "Cash" in the amount of $25.00 and features a stamped bank endorsement on the reverse. Nichols' preprinted name and address appear along the top left border. "Kid" Nichols signed checks are exceedingly rare. This is the first we have ever offered and we can only recall having seen one other at auction. It should be pointed out that Nichols' signature is scarce in any form. He retired in 1906 but wasn't inducted into the Hall of Fame until 1949. He died just four years later, leaving Hall of Fame autograph collectors only a very narrow window of time to acquire his signature. The check (6 x 2.75 inches) displays normal bank cancelation stamps and holes (a few barely touch upon the signature) and is in Excellent to Mint condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
