Babe Ruth personal check, dated November 5, 1945, and signed "G. H. Ruth" along the bottom border. Ruth's signature is rendered in black fountain pen and grades "9." The check, drawn on The Chase National Bank of the City of New York, is made out to "Saks Fifth Avenue" in the amount of $23.18. Ruth's name is preprinted along the left margin. Checks have long been a favorite of autograph collectors due to their inherent authenticity and the fact that the signatures on checks are almost always very well executed. Many years ago several hundred Ruth checks originating from the family appeared on the market all at once. These have long since been absorbed and now Ruth checks are increasingly difficult to find. The check (8.5 x 3.25 inches) displays normal bank cancellation stamps and holes, two vertical folds, toning, a small red stain in the upper left corner, and both paper residue and surface paper loss on the reverse from having once been mounted in an album. There also appears to be a slight erasure mark above Ruth's signature. In Good condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+.
