Original pencil on paper drawing of Honus Wagner, signed by the legendary "Flying Dutchman" on the front. Wagner has inscribed the piece, "Honus Wagner/Pirates" in black fountain pen (grading "8") directly upon his image. This piece has a special provenance. Along with two other similar signed drawings in this auction (Tris Speaker and Babe Ruth), it was created by a woman who lived in Seattle at the time. One of her close friends was Royal Brougham, longtime sports editor for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. (Brougham, who was with the paper in some capacity from 1910 to 1978, was also a philanthropist and has a major thoroughfare in Seattle named for him, as well as a few other local sports parks and venues.) Through her friendship with Brougham, she was able to obtain the signatures of the many sports stars she captured on paper. (Either she would attend a function as Brougham's guest, or Brougham would acquire the signatures for her.) Over time, she amassed a large collection of signed artworks, featuring many of the top athletes and entertainers of the twentieth century, of which this is one. The artwork (7.5 x 9.5 inches) is in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 11.5 x 13.75 inches. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300.
