Collection of twenty-nine 1939 New York World's Fair laurel cards, issued by the Academy of Sport, each individually signed by a different major league player or manager, including eight Hall of Famers. All of the cards in this collection were issued to one boy, Guy Anselmo, who, judging by the amount of classes he attended, was probably the best baseball player in his neighborhood at the close of the World's Fair. It should be noted that this group of cards, as well as many of the other 1939 World's Fair laurel cards offered individually in this auction, all originate directly from an Anselmo family member. All of the cards have been signed on the front, in either blue or black ink, with the signatures ranging from "4" to "10," averaging "7/8." Nearly all of the cards (4.25 x 2.75 inches) display a tiny semicircular impression along the top border; otherwise they are in Excellent to Mint condition overall. The collection is comprised of the following signers: Leo Durocher, Waite Hoyt, Joe Gordon, Johnny Mize, Connie Mack, Arky Vaughan, Joe Medwick, Frankie Frisch, Charlie Root, Joe Marty, Elbie Fletcher, Bill Werber, George Case, Gus Mancuso, Charlie Berry, Rollie Hemsley, Ben Chapman, Frank Hayes, Fred Hutchinson, Dave Keefe, Red Rolfe, Tex Carleton, Ernie Koy, Stan Hack, George Selkirk, Carvel Powell, Burgess Whitehead, Virgil Davis, and George Caster. Total: 29 laurel cards. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+.
