Vintage "New York World's Fair 1939" license plate, signed on the front in black Sharpie (grading "10") by Joe DiMaggio. The "Yankee Clipper" was no stranger to the 1939 New York World' Fair. Not only did he participate as one of the many major-league baseball instructors at the American Academy of Sport pavilion, but he was also presented with the Golden Laurel Award by the Academy for the 1939 season. The award ceremony was chronicled by author Ben Cramer in Joe DiMaggio: The Hero's Life: "When he accepted the Golden Laurel Award at the 1939 New York World's Fair, an eight-foot-tall portrait of Joe was mounted on the wall of the Academy of Sport, dominating the vista for millions of visitors. DiMaggio was Sport. And even Americans who never looked at the sports page knew about Joltin' Joe." Needless to say, this is the only 1939 New York World's Fair license plate we have ever seen signed by DiMaggio, making it a novel conversation piece, with appeal to both baseball and 1939 World's Fair collectors. The tin license plate (13.5 x 6.25 inches) displays wear commensurate with its age and former use, including minor chips to the paint along the edges. In Very Good condition overall. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
