Vintage autograph-album page, beautifully signed in black fountain pen (grading "9/10") by Eddie Bennett and Ben Paschal, both of whom were members of the legendary 1927 New York Yankees. This sheet was removed from a 1920s autograph album that was originally compiled by our consignor's father. (The Babe Ruth and Hack Wilson signed album pages in this auction also originate from the same book.) Even though Paschal was a player, it is the signature of Eddie Bennett, the Yankees' hunchback batboy, that is the rarer of the two today. As a batboy, few autograph collectors sought his signature, which has made it one of the holy grails for those attempting to compile a complete 1927 Yankees autograph collection (Bennett was also the batboy for the 1919 Chicago White Sox). His death in 1935 at the age of thirty-two, is another reason for his signature's scarcity. This is the first Bennett signature we have ever offered, and we can only recall having seen one other example at auction in the past ten years. The sheet (5 x 3.75 inches) displays light toning and a slightly rough left border from having been removed from the album. In Excellent to Mint condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
