Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Only four examples graded higher by SGC. The 1895 N300 Mayo's Cut Plug card of Hall of Famer Ed Delahanty presents him dressed in street clothes in a formal studio portrait. This is one of the nineteenth century's most highly prized Hall of Famer cards, from the most significant of set of the 1890s. There are very few baseball cards of Delahanty, due to his untimely and tragic death in 1903, and the fact that so few baseball-card sets were issued during the years in which he played (1888 to 1903). Delahanty was one of the premier stars of the nineteenth century. This is a very attractive card with no creases, a clean back, and some light edge and corner wear (as is almost always the case with Mayos due to their condition-sensitive black-border design). Centered to the extreme right border (approximately 90/10 L/R). The quality of the portrait image on this card is particularly strong. Submitted for grading by REA, this card has been consigned (along with a near-complete set of Mayos, all of which appear in this auction) by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who assembled the set decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. Delahanty enjoyed his best two seasons in 1894 and 1895, batting .407 and .404, respectively. This is an exceptional example of one of Delahanty's most important cards, dating from the peak of his career, and one of the most desirable Hall of Famers in the Mayo's Cut Plug series. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $4,750. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
