Graded EX 60 by SGC. Only example graded at this level by SGC. Outstanding high-grade example of one of the nineteenth century's great classics: N300 Mayo's Cut Plug of Hall of Famer Cap Anson. Surprisingly, few cards feature Anson dating from his playing days as first baseman and manager of the Chicago Colts (later Cubs). The Mayo's Cut Plug card is one of the few, and this is an outstanding example. Bright and crisp, with a bold portrait, no creases, perfect centering, and with only the slightest wear to the extremely condition-sensitive edges and corners. The front and back are extremely clean. Submitted for grading by REA, this card has been consigned (along with a near-complete set of Mayos, all of which appear in this auction) by the family of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors who assembled the set decades ago in the early days of organized collecting. This is a very impressive and, for Mayo's, a very high-grade example of one of Cap Anson's most desirable cards from this extremely important and popular nineteenth-century series. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grade is $9,750. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
