Original-owner complete set of all eight baseball players from the 1888 N162 Goodwin Champions set, considered by many to be the single most beautiful of all the nineteenth-century tobacco issues, in grades ranging from Poor to Vg-Ex condition. These cards were saved by our consignor's grandfather and have remained in the family since the year of issue. The balance of the collection (which includes sixty-one N172 Old Judge baseball cards) are presented in several lots elsewhere in this auction. The set is highlighted by a VG-EX example of key card Dan Brouthers. All eight cards have been graded by SGC (seven of the eight submitted by REA; the one card not submitted for grading by REA is Glasscock; this one card was purchased by the family on eBay to complete this N162 Baseball set). Of the eight ballplayers in the set, four are Hall of Famers (Anson, Brouthers, Keefe, Kelly) and three other were major stars of the day (Caruthers, Dunlap, Glasscock). Ed Andrews was very popular in Philadelphia but was not a star. SGC Condition Report: Ed Andrews (FAIR 20), Cap Anson (HOF, POOR 10), Dan Brouthers (HOF, VG/EX 50), Bob Caruthers (FAIR 20), "Sure Shot" Dunlap (VG 40), Jack Glasscock (FAIR 20), Tim Keefe (HOF, FAIR 20), and Mike "King" Kelly (HOF, GOOD 30). This set offers a rare opportunity to acquire a presentable yet still relatively affordable complete set of one of the most desirable of all nineteenth-century baseball cards. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades is $4,250. Total: 8 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $5,629
