Offered as a single lot is an outstanding collection of six high-grade 1947 Bond Bread Jackie Robinson Portrait cards, each graded by PSA (all submitted by REA). One has been graded EX-MT+ 6.5, one is EX-MT 6, three are EX+ 5.5, and the sixth is graded EX 5. This is one of the truly great Jackie Robinson cards, and one that in our opinion is a classic that is deserving of a place of honor in any world-class card collection. Dating from 1947, this card represents Robinson's true rookie card. This card has a unique design in the thirteen-card 1947 Jackie Robinson Bond Bread set. It is the only card in the set that features a biography along with advertising on the reverse. In the 1970s, a legendary find of approximately seventy-five high-grade examples of this card "walked in" at a New York convention. Remarkably, these cards (along with the PSA NM 7 example offered as a separate lot in the auction) have been consigned to this auction directly from the long-lost gentleman of hobby lore who walked in to the NY convention in the 1970s! When he called our offices and identified himself, we were really surprised! He knew all about the find, of course, and explained that he had actually been following the market for this card all these many years. He had a special interest in doing so as he kept a few cards as souvenirs, which have not seen the light of day since he sold the find! Not only was he able to tell us all about the sale of his cards in the 1970s, he was able to shed light on exactly how he came to own the find: As a youngster he received them directly from the Bond Bread delivery truck driver in 1947. As we know, all cards from the find were just the one special biography card, and the driver was well aware of this. He told our consignor, who was then ten years old, that he would see what he could do about getting other cards from the set and that if successful he would be back the next day. However, he never came back! Day after day, our consignor looked for the Bond Bread delivery truck near his local store, in the hope that the driver would have additional cards, but he never showed up. Because of this long-ago find and accompanying story, we have always thought that this uniquely designed card in the set may have been produced to be given out at stores directly by grocers at the checkout counter, as a special advertising vehicle when the set was announced, as opposed to being issued one card per loaf (as was the case with the other twelve cards in the set, each of which has advertising-only reverses). Direct from the original source of the 1947 Jackie Robinson Bond Bread Find, this is a remarkable group of these extremely historic cards. Jackie Robinson's true rookie card, dating from his earliest days in the Major Leagues, will always be a classic, and in our opinion this is a card that is likely be even more appreciated in the years to come. (We remember saying the same years ago about 1916 M101-4/5 Babe Ruth rookie cards!) Total: 6 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $5,925
