Graded VG 40 by SGC. 1888 N172 Old Judge card featuring one of the most unusual and memorable images to ever appear on a baseball card: New York Hall of Famer Buck Ewing and the New York Giants mascot, Willie Breslin (Ewing & Mascot, N.Y.'s pose). In addition to being a very desirable Hall of Famer, the pose of this card makes it one of the most interesting images to appear in the Old Judge set. The youngster is dressed in a miniature New York Giants uniform, true to form in every detail to those worn by the players. The mascot was even popular enough to warrant his own card in the 1887 Goodwin set (and was also issued in the N173 Old Judge large cabinet series). The photo quality on this example is reasonably strong and above average for an N172 Old Judge. The card has evenly rounded corners, with some surface chipping in the lower right and upper left corners. The front is fairly clean with a few very light spots of toning. The reverse has several surface creases (not visible from front). This is a very attractive example of one of the most unusual and memorable of all nineteenth-century cards, and featuring one of the most prominent Hall of Famers of the era. This card is one of the highlights from a larger collection of N172 cards, which we have broken down into several smaller lots in the auction. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
