Presented is an extremely rare N690 Kalamazoo Bats card featuring two players: Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson (catching) and center fielder Fred Mann (batting). This is a special card on many counts: It is an outstanding sample card from the rare 1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bats set. It is one of the few "double-player" cards in the set, which gives it a fascinating visual appeal. And perhaps most important: It features Hall of Famer Wilbert Robinson. This is the only double-player card in the N690 Kalamazoo Bats series that features a Hall of Famer. As can easily be seen, this is a magnificent card with an extraordinary appearance. Kalamazoo Bats cards are among the rarest of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues and feature perhaps the most stunning photography of any nineteenth-century set. The image on this card is very bold, with flawless contrast and extraordinary detail. Graded POOR 10 by SGC. Do not be fooled by the harsh SGC grade on this card! Like many nineteenth-century cards, this card has glue residue on the reverse from long ago being glued into a scrapbook. This comes with the territory with pre-1900 cards and is largely responsible for the substantial technical downgrade by SGC. This is a beautiful card, which aside from the glue on the reverse has a light crease in the lower right and a tiny pinhole at the top. Kalamazoo Bats are noted for both their great rarity and unique design. This is a very attractive example of this great rarity, featuring a Hall of Famer, from this important nineteenth-century tobacco issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+.
