Collection of three rare 1912 L1 "Leathers" consisting of Christy Mathewson, Rube Marquard, and Rube Benton. L1 Leathers were issued as part of the same promotion as T3 Turkey Reds and S81 Silks. All three of these issues were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Helmar "Turkish Trophies" brand tobacco. Ten coupons were needed to get a T3, twenty-five coupons for an S81 silk, and fifty coupons were required to obtain each L1 Leather. The L1 Leathers are by far the rarest of these three classic tobacco-premium issues. The leathers measure 9.5 x 11.5 inches at their widest and tallest point. Each L1 is numbered. Marquard is #111 (five tack holes), Benton is #113 (surface scratch on his right foot and tape stains on back), and Mathewson is #133 (back damage from scrapbook removal). These are three extremely pleasing examples, including two key Hall of Famers, from one of the rarest and most desirable of all tobacco-premium issues. Total: 3 leathers. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+.
