Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Exceptionally strong example of the key card of Ty Cobb from the 1912 T227 Series of Champions, issued by Miners Extra and Honest Long Cut, far better than usually found for this very condition-sensitive tobacco issue. In fact, of the fifty-seven T227 Ty Cobb examples graded in the history of PSA, only one has ever graded higher. This is an outstanding example of one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most unusual tobacco cards. The T227 Cobb is literally more than one-hundred times rarer than the T205 or T206 tobacco cards of Ty Cobb, but its much greater rarity is far from being fully reflected in its value. This may, in part, be because T227s, which were packaged in tobacco pouches without protection from either tobacco or general handling, rarely survive in technically high grades and so are not a focus of collectors of high-grade cards. T227 “Series of Champions” are unique in design, and have the look of “giant T206s.” There are only twenty-five cards in the set, including four ballplayers. This stunning example of Cobb is perfectly clean both front and back, with striking colors, no stains, centered towards the bottom left, and with just a tiny light surface wrinkle (barely detectible) on the bottom of the reverse. The reverse features a biography of Cobb and advertising for Miners Extra Smoking Tobacco. This is a tremendous example in magnificent condition for this rare, uniquely designed, and in our opinion, extremely overlooked tobacco issue. One of the best of all Ty Cobb cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000+.
