Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Highest-graded example! One of only two examples graded at this level, with none graded higher. Outstanding example of Hall of Famer Honus Wagner from this extremely rare candy issue. Because Mello-Mints are printed on such thin stock, they are usually found crinkled or creased. This is an extremely attractive example of one of the key Hall of Famers in the set. The card is bright and clean, both front and back, with deep, bright colors, four square corners, and only a single diagonal crease near the lower left corner. The card is centered slightly to the left, with an ever-so-slight diamond cut. The Mello-Mint advertisement on the back is boldly printed in green against an off-white background. The E105 Mello-Mint set has two different poses of Honus Wagner (batting and throwing). This example features Wagner in a batting pose ("s.s." listed as his position). This same batting pose was also used for E90-1 American Caramel Company and E92 Dockman & Sons. While we have never seen this mentioned (aside from in REA catalogs), we think the colors on Mello-Mints are noticeably bolder than cards of the same designs from related sets. Caramel cards in general are rarely found in high grade, and this is especially so with Mello-Mints. This is a magnificent example of Honus Wagner, and a particularly strong looking card for the grade, from one of prewar-card collecting's most condition-sensitive candy-card issues. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $4,444
