Extremely rare complete sixteen-card set of 1910 T209 Contentnea First Series cards, entirely graded by SGC (fourteen cards were submitted by REA and two were already graded when we received the set). This is an unbelievably strong set of these extremely striking 1910-era tobacco cards featuring players from the Virginia League, Carolina Association, and Eastern League. As can easily be seen, the condition is far superior than suggested by the very conservative SGC grades. We grade these cards at higher levels. The complete SGC condition composite follows: Two EX 60: Cowell and Walsh. Four VG/EX 50: Bourquise, Crockett, Hoffman, and Stubbe. Five VG 40: Armstrong, Booles, Cooper, McGeehan, and Sisson. One GOOD 30: Martin. One FAIR 20: Pope. Three POOR 10: Fullenwider (paper loss on back), Gilmore (paper loss on the front), and Lane (paper loss on back). Ten of the cards have the factory rubber stamp ("Factory No. 12, 4th Dist. N.C.") on the reverse. Though it appears to us that SGC has lowered grades due to the factory stamps, this stamp is natural to the set. It is how they were made and distributed by Contentnea Tobacco, and in our eyes is a positive (and in our opinion should not affect the grade). Every card is bright and crisp, with vibrant colors, and flawless registration. T209 Contentnea First Series cards are rarely offered as a complete set, and are highly prized by both minor-league collectors and tobacco-card collectors. This is a gorgeous set! Total: 16 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $5,629
