Complete set of twenty-five 1890 N102 Duke "Bridges" cards, all graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). Rarely offered high-grade complete set of these extremely popular and colorful tobacco cards, with twenty-one cards ranging from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt, three are Vg, and one lesser. This is an extremely strong set across the board, with almost all cards having a far superior appearance to the harsh SGC-assigned grades (as is often the case with nineteenth-century tobacco cards). The SGC grades are as follows: One NM 84: Natural Bridges, Ireland. Four EX/NM 80: First American Bridge, International Bridge, Kentucky & Indiana, and Portage Viaduct. Three EX+ 70: Cantilever Bridge, Mississippi Bridge, and Stony Creek Bridge. Eight EX 60: Delaware & Hudson, High Bride, Long Bridge, Sixth Avenue Bridge, Smithfield St. Bridge, Suspension Bridge, Union Pacific Bridge, and The Viaduct. Five VG/EX 50: Brooklyn Bridge, Callowhill Street, Girard Ave & Penn, St. Johns, and Washington Bridge. Three VG 40: Long Drawbridge, Poughkeepsie Bridge, Scene of Great Accident. One GOOD 30: The Natural Bridge. This exceptionally colorful set was issued with Duke's Honest Long Cut tobacco brand. These cards (2-1/2 x 4-3/16 inches) feature magnificent full-color illustrations of different bridges throughout the country (except two outside the US), including Brooklyn Bridge example. An advertisement for Duke's Honest Long Cut Tobacco appears on the reverse of each card. This is an extremely attractive set, with fascinating subject matter, and with outstanding eye-appeal. The set is one of the long held-back favorite sets from the collection of a very advanced old-time nonsport collector. This very scarce issue is rarely seen as a complete set, and is highly prized by nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total: 25 cards. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,896
