These six circa 1888 tobacco premium albums were part of an extraordinary recently discovered find of nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco items. Included among these six albums are a couple of extreme rarities of special note (A32 Sporting Girls and A19 Floral Beauties in particular) that we have never seen before. In the 1880s, in addition to insert cards, tobacco companies also offered special albums available only by mail in exchange for coupons (usually 75 or 100) which were packed with tobacco one coupon per pack. Each premium album features images of all of the subjects (usually 50 different) in a given set, along with additional background artwork. These souvenir albums were the top prizes offered by the tobacco companies, and have long been highly prized by collectors. These albums presented a diverse range of topics, including fish, famous editors, etc. Many collectors are familiar with the few albums featuring baseball players as they are very popular and expensive. The non-sport albums are just as scarce, yet far more reasonable in price. This substantial collection includes the following albums: Allen & Ginter: 1) A1 American Editors, 1st Series (6 x 9 inches). Gd due to paper loss on cover. 2) A7 Fish from American Waters (9.25 x 6 inches). Vg. 3) A19 Floral Beauties (6.25 x 9 inches). Foldout design. We are not certain of our identification of this advertising foldout album. There is no specific card series mentioned and there are portrait images of beauties on various items (tea kettle, globe, lighthouse, etc.). We have never before seen this Allen & Ginter foldout "album" (which looks very much like it could serve as a standup counter advertising display). Gd condition. W. Duke Sons & Co.: 4) A26 Costumes of All Nations (10.5 x 7 inches) including the original mailing envelope. Gd due to paper loss on cover. 5) A32 Sporting Girls (5.5 x 7.5 inches). Foldout design. Vg. 6) A33 The Terrors of America (10.5 x 7 inches). Technically in Gd condition, but with a much better appearance. As is often the case with these albums, most have some cover wear and this is the cause for much of the downgrading. In many cases the interior pages are much better than suggested by the overall grade assigned each album. This is an impressive group of nonsport tobacco premium albums, including two significant rarities. Total: 6 albums. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,778
