Offered is a unique Chicago Cubs home jersey dating from the 1944 season that was used by the club as a surplus garment. As such, it was most likely intended for issue to either mid- or late-season acquisitions (probably minor league players called up at the end of the season), or possibly for use in spring training. The white flannel jersey features the Cubs embroidered team logo patch on the left breast. A "Wilson" label is situated in the collar, below which is a white felt strip tag bearing the notation "Extra" chain-stitched in black. Also chain-stitched in black along the left front are the numbers "44" "46," and 1, which most likely indicate the size, year, and set number of the jersey. Because this was clearly marked as an “Extra” jersey, no uniform number would have been stitched in the tail (the jersey was almost certainly manufactured without a number on the reverse to allow the club the option of adding whatever number it wanted to at its time of use). The fact that there is trace evidence of what appears to be a number removal on the reverse, combined with its moderate wear (including a team repair on the front), indicates that the jersey was most likely issued to, and used by, a player that season. Aside from the number removal on the reverse, the jersey is completely original, with no other alterations. This is a both an attractive and very rare Cubs home flannel that would make a fine representative 1940s example for any advanced collection. LOA from Dan Knoll & Dave Bushing/SCD Authentic. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,541
