Titled Bambino , issued in 2006, giclee artist's proof numbered "3/15," flawlessly signed by artist Stephen Holland in gold paint pen (grading "10") in the lower right corner. This artwork was limited to an edition of only ninety-nine numbered pieces, fifteen artist's proofs, and fifteen printer's proofs. This is the second rendition of Babe Ruth created by noted artist Stephen Holland. The first, which was issued in 2004, was both a critical and commercial success, selling out almost immediately. To meet the demand, Holland decided to create another artwork of the fabled "Sultan of Swat, which, in many ways, surpasses his earlier work with regard to overall aesthetics. Not surprisingly, the 2006 edition also sold out quickly and is hard to find today. The fact that the offered piece is a rare artist's proof, and is numbered "3," which corresponds to Ruth's fabled uniform number, makes it perhaps the most desirable example in the hobby today. In a quick search on the internet, we were unable to find any of the scarce artist's proofs for sale and this is the first example we have ever seen, let alone handled. Our consignor purchased this piece in 2006, at the time of its issue, for over $3,000, and gallery prices today for just the standard numbered editions reflect at least twice that amount. This is a true modern classic and one of the finest Ruth artworks in the hobby today. Stephen Holland is an internationally acclaimed sports artist. In 1993 he was named the Sports Artist of the Year by the American Sport Art Museum and he was also one of twelve artists selected by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the 100th Anniversary of the Olympics. The giclee measures 27 x 41 inches and is in Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500+. SOLD FOR $4,740
