Graded EX+ 5.5 by PSA. In addition to being his rookie card, 1952 Topps card #407 Eddie Mathews is also one of only a few key Hall of Famers in the rare high-number series, and as the last card in the set, is a condition rarity. Just as card #1 Pafko was subject to wear due to gravitating to the top of the pile, #407 Mathews was also subject to excessive wear at the bottom of the pile. In anything even resembling high grade, this has always been a very difficult card for anyone putting together a quality 1952 Topps set. The image on the front of the offered #407 Mathews is centered to the bottom (approximately 70/30 T/B), which is often the case with this card, with brilliant colors, and just a hint of light wear to the corners visible under magnification. The reverse of the card is perfectly clean and centered to the far bottom right. Very attractive example of one of the most important cards in the 1952 Topps set. Solid Excellent condition with very strong eye-appeal. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500+.
