Collection of seven high-grade baseball premiums from the 1937 and 1938 Dixie Lids series.
These full-color large-format premiums were issued in conjunction with the round 1937 and 1938 Dixie Cup Lid ice-cream top series. The beautiful artwork and rich color of the premiums make them one of the most striking and distinctive of all 1930s issues. They are also very scarce. However, considering how substantial they are, Dixie Lid premiums have received very little attention from collectors, in part due to the fact that they are so large compared to standard cards, and also because they cannot be encapsulated for grading (although this has very recently changed with the introduction of large-format holders by Beckett). A case could be made that they represent one of the best values among all 1930s issues. The 1937 and 1938 Dixie Lid premium sets each feature twenty-four subjects, including four baseball players in each set. (Other subjects include various entertainers and two football stars in each set.) Presented are seven of the eight baseball players from both sets, missing only the 1937 Hubbell for completion of the subset of baseball players. (Note: Hubbell was issued in both 1937 and 1938, in a different pose each year, so the total of eight ballplayers actually includes two different versions of Hubbell). 1)
1937 Dixie Lids Premiums Near-Complete Baseball Set (3 of 4, missing Hubbell for completion): Charlie Gehringer (Ex), Gabby Hartnett (Nr/Mt), Joe Medwick (Ex-Mt). 2)
1938 Dixie Lids Premiums Complete Baseball Set (4): Bob Feller (Vg), Jimmy Foxx (Ex), Carl Hubbell (Ex), and Wally Moses (Ex). All have a Nr/Mt or better appearance but have been appropriately downgraded for minor technical flaws associated with this condition-sensitive issue. Total 7 premiums. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,175
