Original-owner collection of twenty-two different baseball strip cards from three different "W" issues from the 1920s, highlighted by fifteen Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Christy Mathewson, as well as "Black Sox" member Joe Jackson. (This is a very significant card, issued at the very time the Black Sox scandal was unfolding before the public's eyes. It is also one of the few cards of Joe Jackson dating from his playing days.) The early 1920s presented few baseball-card sets for youngsters to collect, and strip cards were both the most prominent and most affordable cards of the era. 1) 1919-1921 W514 (19 cards): #15 Joe Jackson (Vg, almost perfectly centered with bright colors), 21 Maranville (Vg), 25 Collins (Vg), 29, 41 Griffith (Vg), 43 Cobb (Gd), 44, 46, 52 McGraw (Vg), 54, 56 Hornsby (Gd-Vg), 60 Schalk (Vg-Ex), 62 Lajoie (Vg-Ex), 65 Alexander (Vg-Ex), 67, 69 Faber (Vg), 72 Mathewson (Gd-Vg), 74, and 75 Baker (Vg). 2) 1920 W516-1 (1 cards): #8 Johnson (Fr). 3) 1920 W519 - Unnumbered (2 cards): Frisch (Gd) and Babe Ruth (Vg, great-looking card of Ruth dating from his early days with the Yankees). Note: The grades provided are not intended to imply potential PSA or SGC grades. Strip cards from these sets are almost always encapsulated as Authentic by grading companies due to their slightly imperfect cuts. This is a very clean, impressive, great-looking group of cards, which includes a particularly high concentration of Hall of Famers, and very attractive examples of Babe Ruth and Joe Jackson. Total 22 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $2,350
