The 1886 "Spotted Tie" series, featuring sixteen players from the New York Mets of the American Association, is one of the rarest and most desirable subsets of the N172 Old Judge set. They are also among the earliest issued of all N172 Old Judges. Each player from this extremely popular Old Judge subset is featured in a portrait pose with his distinctive "spotted tie." Presented is a tremendous near-complete set consisting of thirteen of the sixteen rare N172 "Spotted Ties," each graded and encapsulated by SGC. This is a very strong group in terms of condition and eye-appeal. One card is EX 60, one is VG/EX 50, three are VG 40, four are GOOD 30, two are FAIR 20, and two are graded POOR 10. As can easily be seen, many of these cards have an appearance superior to their SGC assigned grades, which is often the case with Old Judges. A few of these cards, despite relatively modest technical grades, are simply extraordinary examples. The Holbert, for instance, has been graded to GOOD 30 by SGC due to a light area of glue staining and remnants of scrapbook paper on the blank reverse (a condition flaw that has little or no impact on the desirability of the card to most collectors and comes with the territory with Old Judges), and is otherwise in spectacular Excellent condition. Behel (graded VG 40 by SGC) is a similarly strong card, with some glue stains and remnants of scrapbook removal on the reverse, but is otherwise in Excellent condition, and with outstanding contrast. SGC Condition Report: One EX 60: Dave Orr. One VG/EX 50: Charles Reipschlager. Three VG 40: Stephen Behel, Jack Lynch, and Candy Nelson. Four GOOD 30: Ed Cushman, Elmer Foster, Bill Holbert, and Chief Roseman. Two FAIR 20: Stephen Brady and Tom Forster. Two POOR 10: Al Mays and Tom McLaughlin. The collection of thirteen "Spotted Tie" cards is missing only the following three cards for completion of the series: Crotty, Donahue, and Harkinson. The "Spotted Ties" have always been appreciated for their rarity and as a popular subset to the N172 series. All of these cards are rare. Even a sample is a significant N172 rarity. We have never had the opportunity to offer a complete set of "Spotted Ties." This is not a set, of course, but it is close. This is a very impressive-looking near-complete set of this extremely significant N172 Old Judge subset. Total 13 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000+. SOLD FOR $18,800
